Skincare in your thirties

The 30s are usually characterised by having decreasing levels of estrogen and rapid breakdown of elastin, and collagen. Your skin cell turnover slows down, making your skin thinner and less elastic. The oil glands become less active and the hydrating factors in the skin such as hyaluronic acid slow down, resulting in dry and dehydrated skin. Your skin may also become more prone to dark spots, fine lines, enlarged pores, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. That’s why your skincare regime should evolve with age to comply with the changing needs of your skin.

Here are some upgrades you need to make to your skincare routine when you are in your 30s:

Switch to Milder Cleanser

Hydration is the key to fresher, younger-looking skin, so avoid harsh cleansers. Replace your foam or gel cleansers with a hydrating cream cleanser. You can also start double cleansing to ensure that your skin is thoroughly nourished and moisturised. Use cleansing oil (preferably plant oils rich in antioxidants) followed up with a gentle cleanser. Avoid fragranced and alcohol-based products because they can make your skin dry and irritated.

Slough Away the Dead Skin Buildup

Gentle exfoliation is also important to slough off dead skin cells and to keep your pores clean from grime, makeup and other impurities that might cause acne breakouts, wrinkles, whiteheads, and blackheads. Look for skincare that contains alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta hydroxy acid (BHA), such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid.  If you’re struggling with acne, do use non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic products and avoid harsh scrubbing.

Don’t Neglect your Neck and Hands

Your neck, chest and hands get very dry as you age, so don’t neglect these areas when you’re following your daily skincare routine. Moisturize your neck and hands with nourishing cream and protect them with sunscreen to keep them looking soft and smooth.

Make Anti-aging Products a Part of your Routine

Stepping in your 30s is the ideal time to start using anti-aging products so you’ll have to deal with lesser wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet, and discoloration. Try moisturising and skin-revitalising formulas containing glycolic acid, retinol, Centella Asiatica, and lipohydroxy acid. Provide additional hydration to your skin by adding a repairing night cream to your daily routine.

You can also add some natural skin care products with antioxidants to your regimens, such as green tea, honey, grape seed oil, and jojoba oil to rejuvenate your skin and prevent free radical damage. The eye area is probably the first part of the face to show signs of aging. Therefore, protecting this delicate area with a hydrating, anti-aging well-formulated eye cream is essential.

Add Facial Oils and Serums to your Skincare Routine

Find facial oil that suits your skin type and is rich in nutrients, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties. Facial oils are great for preventing early signs of aging, repairing skin damage, reducing inflammation, moisturising skin, and protection from free radicals. Also, consider adding serums to your skincare regime for retaining the skin’s moisture. Vitamin C serum is ideal for increasing skin elasticity and reducing hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and fine lines. It gives the skin a smooth, luminous look.

Never Forget Sun Protection

Sunscreen should be part of every skin care regime regardless of age, color, or skin type. UVA and UVB rays can trigger premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and dehydration. Make sure your skin is amply protected with a broad spectrum sunscreen whenever you expect a sun exposure, whether it’s sunny or not.
